Fostering Emotional Growth and Resilience
At St. Joseph’s, we recognise the importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as a key component of personal growth and development. SEL empowers students to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and achieve personal and collective goals. Through this, students develop the skills to empathise with others, build healthy identities, and navigate challenges with resilience.
To support our students’ SEL development, we use the Rights, Resilience, and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program, which plays a key role in fostering respect, positive attitudes, and healthy relationships within our school community. Delivered weekly by our Wellbeing Leader,, RRRR lessons focus on building resilience, confidence, and respectful behaviours. These lessons are reinforced daily in the classroom, creating a consistent and supportive environment where students can practice these values regularly. The aim is to embed a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community, where all students feel safe, valued, and empowered.
In addition to RRRR, each school day at St. Joseph’s begins with a Morning Circle. This practice allows teachers to check in with students and set a positive tone for the day, fostering a sense of belonging and emotional readiness. Through this approach, we provide an opportunity for reflection, emotional expression, and a smooth transition into the day’s learning. This aligns with our commitment to creating an environment where social and emotional learning thrives, supporting our students to engage fully in their academic and personal growth.
Supplementary Resources
To enhance our SEL curriculum, we incorporate a range of supplementary resources, including Peaceful Classrooms, the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum, eSafety education, and the Berry Street Education Model.
