Extra Curricular Programs

Extra-Curricular Programs at St Joseph’s Primary School

Tennis Club

Before school, three mornings per week, from 8am until 8.30am.

Our increasingly popular tennis program is a great way to start the day for our students and is open to Prep to Year 6 students. Run by Muscillo Tennis Academy, the sessions take place on our synthetic grass court, with all equipment provided for our students

Chess Club

Operated by ‘Chess Rules Australia’, the weekly sessions are open to students of all ages and abilities. The lunchtime session attracts many students, who are also able to participate in regional competitions. The children love learning from the amazing Miss Toni, the Chess Rules teacher.

Drama Time!

New for 2020, we have the team from 'Drama Time' running after school sessions twice per week for our students. Open to participation from our Prep to 6 students, this program is already proving a popular choice! From 3.30pm-4.30pm each Tuesday and Thursday.

Instrumental Music Program

Offered each day during school hours, students from Prep to Year 6 have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument with the expert tuition of Stephen Hutton and Amy Lynch. With over one-third of the St Joseph's students participating, this is an extremely popular choice. All IMP students perform in twice-yearly concerts for parents and the school community.

School Choir

Two sessions per week are offered by our talented music teacher, Miss Kathryn Sinker. We have both junior and senior choir sessions, with performances at school events such as Grandparent’s Day and Parish gatherings. Choir operates during school time and is open for students from Year 1 to Year 6.

St Joseph’s Skipping Team, “The Jumping Joeys”!

For those who love to skip, we are fortunate to have Mrs Isabelle Freeman (http://www.skipz.org/) leading our skipping team at St. Joseph’s. All students from Year 1 to Year 6 are welcome to try out and train weekly with Mrs Freeman before school. In 2019 our ‘Jumping Joeys’ we awarded several medals for speed skipping at the State Championships! Mrs Freeman also runs a Friday morning ‘skipercise’ session in the basketball court, from 8.10am until 8.30am, which is open to all students. No bookings are necessary and all students are encouraged to skip on a Friday morning before school- there’s no better way to start the day!

Sporting Extra-Curricular:

  • Swimming Squad: trials are held early in term 1, during school time, with the final team competing in the Dendy District competition. In the lead up to the competition, Ms Tanya Huebner conducts before school training at Harold Holt pool, from 7.30am.
  • Athletics and Cross Country: all students are able to join these teams to represent the school at the Dendy District competitions
  • Cricket: Students in Grade 4-6 have the opportunity to participate in the 20//20 cricket blast competition.
  • Netball after school teams: Organised by ‘Saints Netball’ we currently have seven teams open to our students. With after school training three times a week, this is a popular choice for many of our students.
  • Soccer/ Futsal: organised by parent volunteers, the teams train once per week after school
  • Rugby: For students in Grade 5 and 6, the team trains during terms three and four, with teams participating in the touch rugby competition. Both the boys and girls’ teams were State Rugby Champions in 2018.
  • Interschool Netball and Football: Year 5 and 6 students participate in the Dendy interschool leagues for football and netball, competing against neighbouring schools each Friday during Term 2. This culminates in lightning premiership events for all netball and football teams.
  • Hooptime Basketball: Year 4-6 students participate in the hooptime competition during Term 3 each year.
  • Throughout the year, students from Prep to 6 participate in a range of sporting clinics, including lawn bowls and lacrosse!
  • All students participate in an intensive 2-week swimming program in Term 3.

Coding Club

A popular choice of extra-curricular for our students, expertly led by our deputy principal Martin Earl, supported by our Year 6 IT Captains. The club runs one lunchtime per week, and is open to different year levels each term.

Art Club

This operates during one lunchtime per week and is expertly led by our amazing art teacher, Marta Cummings. Supported by our Year 6 Art Captains, this club is open to students of all ages.

Quiet Club

Open every lunch time from 1.10pm-2pm, quiet club is a place for children of all ages to come and relax, play a bit of lego, chess, drawing etc. This is a much welcomed retreat for those children who would like a break (sometimes quick) from the busyness of the playground. Staffed by our principal and classroom teachers daily.

Garden Club

Held in our ‘secret garden’ one lunchtime per week, this year the club is operated by Miss Nancy and her team of helpers. Our students love to grow, harvest and eat their produce throughout the year, and our secret garden is also regularly tended to by a committed group of ‘green-fingered’ parents.

Library Club

All students are welcome to pop into our library club, which runs for one lunchtime each week by our Literacy Leader, Mrs Jackson.
