St. Joseph’s is an inclusive and welcoming parish primary school that has been serving the needs of the Malvern families for 130 years.
We are located in Stanhope Street and are bordered by De La Salle College and St Joseph's Parish Church. We are well served by public transport and a short distance from Glenferrie Road, Malvern.
St. Joseph’s has a current school enrolment of approximately 170 students, with eight classes from Prep– Year 6.
From 2019 the classes are structured as 'straight grades'.
We firmly believe that the wellbeing of children is fundamental to high outcomes in learning. We are committed to the explicit teaching of foundational skills in English and Mathematics as we know that these skills and understandings provide the building blocks for all future learning.
We provide a broad, contemporary curriculum, which provides learning experiences that cater for individual student’s needs and inspire a love of learning. As a Catholic school, we provide an education that equips our young people with the knowledge, skills, hope and optimism to live meaningful lives and shape and enrich the world around them.
We have a strong emphasis on the social-emotional wellbeing of students, with a range of programs and practices in place to assist students to develop a positive sense of self and positive relationships with others. Teachers use the 'Personal and Social Capability', from The Victorian Curriculum, to form the foundations for the social and emotional learning of students.
Specialist teaching areas include Music and Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Physical Education/ Sport and Italian.
Our facilities include a school library, multi-purpose room and large hall, which we utilise for whole school functions and assemblies. Our playground is well-equipped with two adventure playgrounds, a basketball court and grassed area. All classrooms are equipped with networked laptops, chrome books, state of the art projectors and iPads to support and enrich student learning.
We are fortunate to have a thriving instrumental music program on site daily, with a quarter of our students learning a range of instruments. Twice yearly concerts showcase the impressive learning that takes place in these lessons.
Our incredibly supportive and inclusive parent community is active in assisting in our daily literacy program, hot lunches, membership of the Education Advisory Board, as well as fundraising, organising of social activities and participation in working bees through our Parents and Friends Association. Our parents truly work in partnership with the staff to provide the best possible education for the children at our school.
An Outside School Hours Care program, operated by Extend, is located on the school site and provides before (from 7.30am) and after school care program (from 3.30 pm to 6 pm).
