After two nights of lighting up Malvern Town Hall a group of weary 5/6 students headed off to Clayton in an attempt to light up Fregon Reserve for the Dendy District Rugby Gala Day.
After 40 minutes of intensive training to learn safe tackling techniques they were ready to hit the field, with both girls and boys teams to take on St. Patrick’s to get their campaigns underway.
Light it up they did, with the girls dominating in a 7 try to 0 demolition, led by Chloe McCormick and Macy Priamo scoring 3 tries apiece, with one to Ellie Fielding, and the boys winning in a 5 try romp, thanks to Liam Cornish, who scored all 5.
The second round saw the teams come up against St. Joan of Arc, with both again prevailing, the girls 3 tries to 1 and the boys 5 tries to 1. This saw both teams head into the semis as the number one ranked team, with both teams finishing the group stages with 2 wins, scoring 10 tries and conceding just 1.
The semis saw the boys come up against St. Mary’s, Malvern East and the girls playing Galilee. After a tight start to the boys semi, where an early St. Joey’s try was quickly followed by one to St. Mary’s, we ran away with it to score a comfortable 5 tries to 1 victory, while the girls were never really troubled in their advance to the final.
The final saw an Aladdin versus Lion King battle, as we faced St. Mary’s, Hampton in both finals, with the school also having their production over the previous two nights.
In the end we pulled a genie out of the bottle with victory in both finals, thanks to Chloe dominating the girls final with a 4 try performance and Liam and Alfie Kidman dragging us over the line in the boys.
State finals here we come!
